Sound Nutrition Advice and MyPyramid
By: Linda McDonald, MS, RD and Sharise Amante

Real Nutrition: Everyone loves the latest fad, and our diets are a prime target. However, the principals of good nutrition never change. Even with the USDA's introduction of the new food pyramid, the focus is on how we can better use and understand, not change, this healthful information. Rely on credible sources such as www.mypyramid.gov to stay informed and concentrate on the basics to build a healthy lifestyle.

Real Life: Sound nutrition advice is always in fashion; in fact, it has never been trendier to be healthy. Try to understand the basic guidelines for each food group as given by the new USDA MyPyramid. Here are a few you may not know:

  • At least half of all grains in your diet should be whole grains, which provide more fiber, vitamins, and minerals than processed grains, and can control your blood sugar. Start your children's diet out right, by keeping whole grains in the house and have processed grains be an exception when eating out.
  • All fats are not created equal, as we now see a clear distinction between the health benefits and risks of saturated and unsaturated fats. See articles: The Truth about Trans Fats and Parents Facing Fat Facts.
  • Choose a rainbow of colors for fruits and vegetables as each color has different nutrients that keep you healthy and prevent disease. Go the Fruit and Vegetables Section.
  • Exercise is as critical to our diet as the food we eat.
